Get to Know Your Prospective Roommate
Some things to think about when your interviewing each other, and ask yourself if you can be tolerant and respectful of your prospective roommate’s habits?
Daily life Questions
Is your prospective roommate an early-riser or a night owl morning person or "night owl"? If you are a morning person, how do you feel about late night TV watching in common rooms, guests coming home at midnight with your roommate?
Does your prospective roommate work, study, spend most of their waking hours at home? In the evening, are they homebodies or ‘out and about’ types.
Is your prospective roommate a consummate cleaner, middle of the road or a rather relaxed about all things related to hygiene?
Does your roommate have frequent guests (significant other, regular random visitors, 10 siblings who rotationally visit)? How do you feel about overnight guests? If you agree that it's OK, you'll also need to agree to limits. Make a decision if you don’t want keys distributed to either for girlfriends/boyfriends or for platonic friends.
Does either one of you own a pet?
How do you feel about playing music, TV?
Do you or your roommate they host parties. If so, what are your policies about advance notification, limits, etc.
How do you feel about your roommate wearing your clothes, using your stereo, drinking your soda? Would you prefer to be asked permission first?
Substances
Smoking habits: if yes, can and how will you permit smoking in or around your home?
Drinking habits: Social, constant, teetoltaler?
Other substances?
Substance abuse history?
Obligations and Chores
Who will be responsible for payment of the following: rent, telephone, cable, internet, renter’s insurance, household repairs? How and when will non-payer be reimbursed? What happens if one of you fails to pay on time?
Will you share groceries, cooking, kitchen clean-up?
How will you divvy up other chores: cleaning, laundry, trash? And what will remedies be for roommate who fails to do their share?
